roger frost: workshops I delivered

cover photo: a weekend course at Kilarny Lakes, Ireland.

I ran courses to introduce school staff, lecturers, advisers and teacher trainers to the ways that technology might improve education. My main idea was that once you start using computers, the technology takes you deeper than you’d been used to. For example the computer helps you draw a graph, but it also now helps you extract ideas from it. Often schools didn’t have the equipment they needed to do this, and if they did it was troublesome. Also many IT departments didn’t see how their efforts were not helping other subjects in schools. So it wasn’t always possible to keep my main thing, the main thing and there was frustration. Over 20 years teachers did get better at using sensors, but their skills with Powerpoint and the whiteboard were more useful and they became the main thing.

example workshops:

  • Practical work with sensors to see how they enhance a curriculum.
  • A workshop using data analysis tools, PowerPoint, whiteboards, software models
  • Day courses or university course modules.
